I made a mistake.
This blog is for you to learn better people skills and apply those skills to loving God and others. However, I think I have been misleading in many of my posts when I spoke about God. I want to clear up one of my misconceptions here.
God doesn’t promise you good people skills nor mental health.
This is the gospel: God created a good world, but man messed up. From the start, we haven’t done the right thing, and we still fail every day. God saw our flaws. He tried to guide people to do good. In an ultimate act to restore the world, he sent himself—his Son Jesus. Jesus defeated evil by dying for our evil, and he gave us freedom from our own evil. He has made it possible to again live in relationship with God in His good world.
However, till Jesus returns, we live in a world where we testify to the freedom we now have in Jesus. This place is still evil and broken. We cannot escape it.
I suggested Jesus would immediately restore anything, including our people skills and mental health, in my posts.
I was wrong. I’m sorry.
Sometimes, even when we try our best to love others and practice good habits, we will hurt. Our minds will be exhausted, and you will want to quit. Jesus doesn’t promise us mental prosperity. He came to restore this world through sacrifice, and sacrifice isn’t always pretty nor healthy nor beneficial.
Jesus said this: follow Him and you will participate in the restoration of everything. Nothing more and nothing less.
Moreover, if you want something true, meaningful, and real, you should follow Jesus. I’m not against counseling and therapy. Mental health just isn’t the purpose of living. If you believe better people skills and perfect mental health will fulfill you, you are wrong. Trust me. I tried it already.
Therefore, following Jesus isn’t about your mental health. Sometimes, you will find healing from loneliness and depression. You should, and I did. You may also have to follow Jesus through loneliness and depression.
Why? Because through sacrifice, loving, and following Jesus, we are living as we should. We will be free.
No one said living the right way in a very, very wrong world would be easy.
You might have to go crazy for Jesus.
